A Comprehensive History of Chelsea FC: From Founding to Footballing Glory
Chelsea Football Club’s history dates back to April 1905 and is characterized by numerous highs and lows, establishing itself as one of England’s most successful football teams. The club has also achieved considerable success in European competitions.
Club Name
The name Chelsea Football Club originated in 1904 when Henry Augustus ‘Gus’ Mears and his brother, Joseph Theophilus, acquired the deeds for Stamford Bridge. Initially, they aimed to lease the venue, but Fulham declined their offer, leading them to create their own football team.
On April 20, 1905, the Mears brothers, along with Tom Lewin Kinton and John Henry Maltby, officially founded Chelsea. They chose to name the club after the nearby borough of Chelsea, although they also contemplated names like Stamford Bridge FC, London FC, and Kensington FC.
Chelsea Badge
Throughout its history, Chelsea has had several badges, with the current one being the club’s 11th permanent crest. They also used a special crest for the 2005/06 season, and their badge has roots in their centenary design.
The badge for the 2005/06 season represented a return to the club’s crest used from 1953 to 1964. The club modernized this former badge and has continued using it without the centenary markings, restoring the lion to a prominent position.
The club’s inaugural badge showcased a Chelsea Pensioner at the center of a circle, but in the 1950s, they switched to a shield featuring the letters ‘CFC’ superimposed. This change was initiated by Ted Drake, who wanted to distance the club from its Pensioners nickname.
However, the shield design was short-lived, lasting only until the 1952/53 season, when Chelsea reverted to a circular badge. This new badge was the first to depict a lion holding a staff beneath five red roses. In 1964, with Ken Bates’ arrival, the club adopted a simplified badge featuring just the letters ‘CFC.’
This simple design remained until 1967, when the badge featured a lion above the letters ‘CFC.’ Chelsea used this design until 1986, when they introduced the first badge featuring a lion straddling the two Cs in their name.
Chelsea alternated between using and removing the circular outline of the badge until 2005/06. The club also changed the colors used in the badge, with the lion appearing in red, yellow, and white, while the circular design saw variations in shades of blue.
Kit History
In Chelsea’s entire history as a football club, they have only worn a non-blue kit during their inaugural year. Initially, they played in green jerseys and white shorts but adopted their traditional blue colors in 1906, switching to blue shorts in 1964.
League History
Throughout their existence, Chelsea has played exclusively in the top two tiers of the English football league system. They entered a division in the 1905/06 season after joining the EFL right after their formation and quickly secured promotion to the top flight within two seasons.
After gaining promotion to Division One, Chelsea had three seasons as a top-tier team and has frequently remained in this level of competition. The only times they played outside the top flight were from 1910-12, 1924-30, 1962-63, 1975-77, 1979-84, and 1988-89, following their first two seasons.
Chelsea has been a constant presence in the Premier League since it began in the 1992/93 season, becoming one of the league’s most successful clubs with five Premier League titles, along with one Division One title.

Before the Premier League era, Chelsea had only won one major top-flight trophy during the Division One period. They achieved their first title in the 1954/55 season, finishing with 52 points from 42 matches, winning 20 of those games, while three teams ended with 48 points as runners-up.
Since then, Chelsea has won the Premier League title five times, with their latest victory in the 2016/17 season. Their first Premier League title came in the 2004/05 season under Jose Mourinho, following significant financial investment from Roman Abramovich. They successfully defended their title in the 2005/06 season.
Carlo Ancelotti brought another Premier League title to Chelsea in the 2009/10 season, achieving a domestic double with the FA Cup. Mourinho returned to the club to claim the title again in 2014/15, while Antonio Conte led the team to their most recent title in 2016/17.
Chelsea has only managed to win the domestic double under Ancelotti in 2009/10. The club has won the FA Cup eight times and the EFL Cup five times to date, while both Roberto Di Matteo and Thomas Tuchel have contributed Champions League titles to Chelsea’s accomplishments.
Players and Managers
Coaches like Mourinho, Ancelotti, Di Matteo, and Tuchel have left their mark on Chelsea’s history through their successful tenures. Their leadership helped shape numerous club legends, including Frank Lampard, John Terry, and Eden Hazard.
John Terry spent 19 years at Chelsea, becoming the club’s most successful captain with 717 appearances. The center-back collected five Premier League titles, five FA Cups, and one Champions League trophy, in addition to leading the team to one Europa League title.
One of the best centre-backs in the Premier League’s history, Terry led by example with his willingness to put his body on the line. Terry contributed to 214 clean sheets, the most of any defender in the Premier League.
