Chelsea Face £52m Dilemma as Cole Palmer’s Rise Puts Christopher Nkunku Future in Question
Chelsea’s abundance of attacking talent has created a complex situation, particularly concerning the utilization of Christopher Nkunku and Cole Palmer. Enzo Maresca’s challenge is balancing these talents while maintaining squad harmony and performance continuity.
Nkunku, who arrived for £52 million in 2023, has shown prolific form when given opportunities, scoring 10 goals in just 688 minutes across all competitions. However, despite his clinical performance, he has only started once in the Premier League, mostly being deployed as a makeshift No.9 due to Maresca’s tactical setup and desire to maintain team balance.
Nkunku’s favored role, as seen in pre-season, is in the No.10 or second striker position, where he can operate between the lines rather than leading the line as a primary striker.
Cole Palmer’s breakout form this season has also complicated Nkunku’s chances of playing as a No.10. Palmer has become a key playmaker for Chelsea, and his influence diminishes when played out wide, making it difficult to field both players in their preferred positions without impacting the overall team structure. Maresca’s attempt to play Palmer on the wing in their season opener was less effective, showing Palmer’s strength lies in a central role.
Reports suggest Nkunku is frustrated by his limited role and is considering his options ahead of January. Given his goal-scoring capabilities and Chelsea’s high investment, letting him leave this early would be a risky move, especially as the team competes across multiple competitions, including the FIFA Club World Cup in June.
If Maresca can find a way to rotate and maximize the abilities of both Palmer and Nkunku while addressing defensive concerns, Chelsea could unlock their full attacking potential.
However, the club must proceed cautiously to avoid disrupting squad depth and morale, making it essential for Maresca to develop a tactical plan that accommodates both players without sacrificing Chelsea’s stability.
