Chelsea Faces Injury Setback as Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill Withdraw from England Duty
Chelsea has been handed an unexpected injury concern as both Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill have pulled out of England duty for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Greece and Ireland.
The decision comes after both players featured in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Arsenal, with Palmer reportedly dealing with a prior doubt regarding his fitness.
Colwill’s withdrawal, however, has raised significant concern for Chelsea and manager Enzo Maresca. The 21-year-old has been a mainstay in Chelsea’s defense this season, starting and playing every minute of all 11 Premier League games.
His leadership on and off the pitch has become invaluable to the team.
Maresca had recently praised Colwill’s growth into a leadership role, with the player now regularly seen directing others in the squad.
Both Palmer and Colwill will remain at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground to recover from their respective injuries during the international break.
This adds to the growing list of high-profile withdrawals from the England squad, including players like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, and Bukayo Saka, with the latter two having suffered injuries against Chelsea.
Chelsea will be hoping both Palmer and Colwill are fit for their next Premier League match, which is away at Leicester later this month.
In the event they are unavailable, Maresca can turn to Axel Disasi and Tosin Adarabioyo, who both have experience filling in at the back, with Adarabioyo having stepped in during Wesley Fofana’s suspension earlier in the season.
