What Chelsea Boss Enzo Maresca Has Said About Mykhaylo Mudryk Amid ‘Cut Their Losses’ Rumors
Chelsea are facing a pivotal decision regarding the future of Mykhaylo Mudryk, the Ukrainian winger signed for a substantial fee of up to £90 million in January 2023.
Despite glimpses of his potential, Mudryk has struggled to live up to the expectations that came with his price tag. Now, the club must decide whether to persist with his development or move him on in the January transfer window, potentially taking a significant financial hit.
Mudryk’s Challenges
Mudryk’s adaptation to the Premier League has been slower than anticipated, and his performances have not yet justified his transfer fee.
While this is not entirely his fault, as he had no control over the price Chelsea paid for him, the winger’s struggles have highlighted the challenges of integrating into a new league and team.
Former Manchester United chief Mick Brown recently commented on Chelsea’s situation, stating:
“I hear they’re keen to move him on in January. I think they’ve got the makings of a very good team at Chelsea, but he isn’t likely to be a part of that. There isn’t space for him in the team at the moment, and I don’t think Maresca has been particularly impressed by him so far.”
Brown also suggested that Chelsea may need to accept a much lower transfer fee for Mudryk, potentially around £30 million, far less than his original cost. Additionally, Mudryk’s high wages could complicate finding a club willing to take him on.

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has publicly expressed faith in Mudryk, emphasizing the player’s gradual improvement and his potential to contribute under a system that prioritizes wingers. Speaking in October, Maresca stated:
“We’re working with him and all the wingers. They need to arrive inside the box in the position where Misha [Mudryk] scored. He’s struggled to arrive there, now he’s started to. That’s where we’re going to score goals.”
Maresca acknowledged that Mudryk’s learning process has been slower than some of his teammates but remains confident that the winger will eventually adapt and thrive at Chelsea:
“Probably he’s one of the guys that the learning process is more slow compared to the rest. But he’s improving. Slowly, slowly, we’re going to arrive where he will score more goals and be more important for us.”
The Dilemma
Chelsea face a delicate balance between cutting their losses and giving Mudryk the time and support he needs to succeed.
Moving on from him risks the possibility of him fulfilling his potential elsewhere, as was the case with Mohamed Salah during his brief Chelsea tenure.
On the other hand, retaining him requires patience and the belief that he can become a key player under Maresca’s winger-focused system.
If Chelsea decide to sell, they will need to accept a significant financial loss. If they choose to keep him, they will need to provide the environment and opportunities for him to develop into the £90 million player they envisioned.
