Enzo Maresca Explains Why He Was ‘Absolutely Happy’ with Chelsea’s Goalless Draw
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca hailed his team’s resilience following a hard-fought 0-0 draw at Goodison Park against Everton.
Despite the disappointment of missing out on the chance to top the Premier League table, Maresca expressed satisfaction with his side’s performance in challenging conditions.
A Tough Test at Goodison Park
The Blues started strong, creating better chances in the first half, but were forced to rely on an inspired performance from goalkeeper Robert Sanchez in the second period.
Everton, battling near the relegation zone but boasting the league’s best defensive record with seven clean sheets, tested Chelsea’s resolve throughout.
Reflecting on the match, Maresca explained why he saw more positives in the stalemate than in Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Brentford the previous weekend.
“I’m absolutely happy,” Maresca said. “I just told the players I am more happy today than after the Brentford game. It was a tricky game at a tricky stadium against a tricky team.
Everton’s Defensive Resilience
While struggling offensively this season, Everton under Sean Dyche have been a defensive powerhouse, making Sunday’s encounter particularly challenging.
“They are defensively top,” Maresca noted. “They are one of the five best teams in Europe in terms of clean sheets. You struggle to create chances against them. It’s not an easy game. You have to learn to play different games—long balls, second balls, set pieces. Football is not just about what we do on the ball; it’s also about how you defend and adapt.”
Missed Opportunities
Chelsea might have secured all three points if Nicolas Jackson had capitalized on either of his two promising first-half chances. However, the forward’s struggles in front of goal left the Blues four points behind league leaders Liverpool, who secured a convincing win over Tottenham Hotspur on the same day.
Maresca’s Perspective
Despite the dropped points, Maresca maintained his optimistic outlook, emphasizing the importance of adapting to various challenges over the course of a demanding Premier League season.
“We prepared the game like always to try and win, but sometimes there is another team that tries to do the same. I’m happy with the way the players dealt with the difficulties today.”
Chelsea’s ability to adapt and grind out a point against a defensively robust Everton side demonstrates their growing maturity under Maresca. As the title race heats up, their capacity to perform in such tricky fixtures could prove pivotal.
