Renato Veiga, a versatile player capable of operating both in defense and midfield, signed for Chelsea in July 2024 from FC Basel. At 20 years old, he committed to a seven-year contract with an additional one-year option.

The son of former Cape Verde international Nelson Veiga, Renato honed his skills in the academy of Portuguese giants Sporting CP. He made his debut for Sporting B in 2020 and spent time building experience in Portugal’s third tier before completing a loan move to Bundesliga club Augsburg in January 2023. There, he featured regularly in the Bundesliga, making 13 appearances. In the summer of 2023, he transferred to Basel, where he quickly became a key player, making 26 appearances across all competitions.

Veiga’s international experience includes representing Portugal at Under-21 level, where he played a crucial role in their European Championship qualifiers, helping secure victories in six of the seven matches.

He made his Chelsea debut in the opening Premier League fixture of the 2024/25 season against Manchester City, before earning his first start in a UEFA Conference League play-off match against Servette. His first Premier League start followed in a win at Bournemouth, where he played in midfield. Veiga netted his first Chelsea goal in a home victory over Gent, heading in a cross from Mykhailo Mudryk.

In October 2024, Veiga earned his senior Portugal debut in a UEFA Nations League match, playing the full 90 minutes at center-back and helping Portugal secure a 2-0 win over Poland, their first home defeat in two years.
