Former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel is reportedly in discussions to become the next full-time manager of the England men’s national team. Tuchel has been out of a job since he left Bayern Munich at the end of last season after a disappointing third-place finish in the Bundesliga.
The 51-year-old has also been linked with the Manchester United job due to the uncertainty surrounding Erik ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford. However, recent reports suggest that Tuchel might be leaning towards taking on the England national team role instead.

According to German journalist Christian Falk, Tuchel is currently in talks with the FA about becoming the next head coach of the Three Lions. This news comes shortly after interim manager Lee Carsley led England to a surprising 2-1 defeat against Greece, admitting afterward that the team’s setup was not adequately prepared.
Though it’s not clear how close the FA is to finalizing a deal with Tuchel, reports from BILD suggest that the negotiations are at an advanced stage. This indicates that the FA may be looking to secure Tuchel’s services before any other club, such as Manchester United, makes a concrete move for him.
Tuchel’s Interest in International Management
Tuchel has previously expressed openness to managing at the international level, stating that he would consider taking on a national team role if it had the potential to win major tournaments like the World Cup or the Euros. This willingness to move into international football was expressed after his departure from Chelsea in 2022, highlighting his interest in the right opportunity to compete for trophies on a global stage.
Timing and Opportunities
Tuchel met with Manchester United officials over the summer but decided that it wasn’t the right time to return to club management. With Manchester United likely sticking with Ten Hag for the time being, this situation appears to have paved the way for Tuchel to pursue the England job. Pep Guardiola has also been mentioned as another ambitious target for the FA, but Tuchel seems to be the leading candidate for now.
